Everyone is talking about personal branding in 2024 and LinkedIn seems to be the main place where most of the personal branding chat is happening.
In fact, there are many people who consider personal branding synonymous with posting on LinkedIn, even though it’s so much more.
But the thing is, LinkedIn is considered to be the most professional social media platform, where people go to create though leadership posts and network with their ideal customer audience.
If you are an entrepreneur, you almost certainly need to be on LinkedIn.
This is why we teamed up with LinkedIn to host a personal branding masterclass at the LinkedIn HQ in London and learn how to actually make more money with your profile.
The top personal branding tips for LinkedIn
We’re not going to share alllll the secrets here, because those are reserved for the lucky members who got to be part of the day.
But we were able to get valuable information as to what genuinely helps your profile and what the mysterious “LinkedIn algorithm” loves.
The key takeaways were:
- Post genuine insights and don’t just copy what seems to be trending
- Try to stick to one topic or set of content pillars and don’t post too many things about different topics
- Experiment with different formats to see what sticks: one particular format will perform better for you than others. Use that – don’t copy what people say is best, as your profile will tell you.
- Be consistent and show up with the same tone of voice. It doesn’t need to be every day, but you need to be regular enough for your audience to expect your content.
- Stay topical and react to the news once in a while, rather than just putting generic posts. Keep people updated with the latest in your industry.
Myths of LinkedIn
One of the best things about the session was learning what’s true and what’s not about LinkedIn.
There are tons of posts online telling you how to “boost your profile”, but a lot of it isn’t true and the LinkedIn team confirmed the following:
- It doesn’t matter what time you post or whether you schedule it in advance
- Liking your own post doesn’t give the post an extra boost
- “Warming up the algorithm” isn’t a thing
- Having a personal brand manager manage your account on your behalf actually violates LinkedIn’s T&Cs
- LinkedIn followers can be purchased and they will hurt your profile and reach
The personal branding masterclass was so popular that we will likely do more in this series. We will most likely do a fireside chat with the LinkedIn team at another venue.
